BRINGING BACK TERTULIAS TO THE DC COMMUNITY

Vida Senior Centers and the 2022 AARP Community Challenge Program are bringing Tertulias back to the Washington D.C. community.

The main point of the Tertulias is to create a space for the seniors where they can be informed, but most importantly where they can raise their voices about the challenges they experience firsthand in several areas while living in the greater DC area. The tertulias open the space for seniors to engage with the civic leadership of the city and subject matter experts to discuss relevant topics.

During tertulias, seniors and experts discussed transportation difficulties, housing challenges, mental health stigma in the Latino community, and ways to improve policies for older adults in Washington DC.

We had a great turnout of presenters and participants. At-large Councilmember Anita Bonds, Commissioner of Ward 1 Nancy Miranda, Office Attorney Magdalena Acevedo, Policy Analyst at Older Adult Transportation FootePrints Heather Foote, Special Projects Coordinator of DACL Rinaldo Washington, Physician and Vida’s lead mental health and behavioral counselor Dr. Jorge Sodero, and AARP DC State Director Louis Davis Jr., all listened attentively and provided detailed outreach information, available resources and possible solutions to seniors’ concerns.

Thank you AARP for your support, Vida looks forward to continuing this initiative and impriving the quality of life of seniors in the Washington DC area.
